So, What Is This All About?

One of the most exciting community events happening in Davao this 2026 is the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary 802nd Squadron Community Run on April 19, 2026 at Freedom Park in Roxas, Davao City, and I am going to be there.

This is a chance to come together as a community, honor the spirit of volunteerism, and support the maritime service heroes of the PCGA. This event is designed to welcome everyone, from seasoned runners to those who haven’t jogged since high school PE class

Who Are the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary?

The Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) is the volunteer civilian arm of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). Founded to support the PCG’s mission of promoting maritime safety, enforcing maritime laws, and conducting search and rescue operations, the PCGA plays a vital role in our coastal communities — and they do it voluntarily.

The 802nd Squadron is one of the PCGA’s active units based here in Davao City. These dedicated volunteers give their time, skills, and effort to serve our community, often without the recognition they truly deserve. This community run is one way they’re reaching out — and it’s one way we can reach back.

Key roles of the PCGA include:

  • Maritime search and rescue operations
  • Assisting in disaster response and relief operations
  • Promoting water safety and maritime education
  • Supporting law enforcement at sea
  • Organizing community outreach programs like this run

Fun runs have a surprisingly rich history.

The modern concept of the “fun run” emerged in the 1970s jogging boom in the United States, when running began to shift from being an elite athlete’s sport to a mainstream, community activity.

In the Philippines, fun runs became enormously popular in the 1990s and 2000s, with events like the Manila Marathon and charity runs sprouting across the archipelago.

What makes a fun run special isn’t just the exercise — it’s the community.

Studies in sports psychology consistently show that group exercise increases motivation, boosts mood, and creates lasting social bonds. When you add a charitable cause to the mix, the sense of purpose amplifies everything.

You’re not just burning calories; you’re contributing to something bigger than yourself.

In Davao, community runs have become a beloved tradition. From corporate fun runs to school events and now to this wonderful initiative by the PCGA 802nd Squadron — these events bring Davaoeños together in the most energetic way possible.

Why Community Events Like This Matter

Community events are the lifeblood of a city. Here’s why this one particularly deserves your attention and participation:

  • They build social connections — Running side by side with your neighbors, colleagues, and strangers who become friends is something no app can replicate.
  • They support meaningful causes — The proceeds and awareness generated help fund the PCGA’s volunteer operations, ensuring they can continue protecting our coastlines and waterways.
  • They promote health and wellness — Getting Davaoeños moving, even just for a day, has real and lasting health benefits.
  • They celebrate volunteerism — In a world where many people talk about making a difference, the PCGA actually does it.
  • They create lasting memories — Years from now, you’ll remember lacing up your shoes and crossing that finish line.

You Don’t Have to Run the Whole Thing!

I know what some of you are thinking — “I’m not a runner.”

And that’s perfectly fine!

Community runs like the PCGA 802nd Squadron Community Run 2026 are designed for everyone, not just the athletic crowd.

Most fun runs offer multiple distance options or pace categories, so you can:

  • Walk the entire route
  • Run-walk
  • Choose a shorter distance
  • Simply show up and enjoy yourself

The goal isn’t really to finish first.

The goal is to show up, have fun, and contribute to the cause.

Every step counts — and every participant matters.

How to Prepare for a Fun Run in One Month (Even If You’re Out of Shape)

Got a month to prepare and haven’t exercised in a while?

No worries — I’ve got you.

Here’s a simple, manageable plan:

Week 1: Just Get Moving

  • Walk 20–30 minutes every day — even just around your neighborhood
  • Focus on consistency, not speed or distance
  • Stretch for 5–10 minutes after each walk

Week 2: Introduce Light Jogging

  • Try the run-walk method: jog 1 minute, walk 2 minutes, repeat for 20 minutes
  • Do this 3–4 times this week
  • Listen to your body — no need to push through pain

Week 3: Build Stamina Gradually

  • Increase jogging intervals: jog 2 minutes, walk 1 minute
  • Try to cover at least 2–3 km per session
  • Hydrate well — at least 8 glasses of water daily

Week 4: Taper and Rest

  • Keep activity light — a couple of easy 20-minute jogs
  • Get 7–8 hours of sleep leading up to race day
  • Prepare your gear, race kit, and route in advance

On Race Day:

  • Eat a light meal 1.5–2 hours before (banana + rice or toast works well)
  • Wear comfortable, breathable clothes and broken-in shoes
  • Arrive early to warm up and soak in the atmosphere
  • Don’t start too fast — pace yourself from the beginning
  • Smile.
