Povidone Iodine (or Commonly Known by its Brand Name Betadine)

Posted on January 17, 2026 by Chester Canonigo Leave a Comment on Povidone Iodine (or Commonly Known by its Brand Name Betadine)

The classic wound cleaner.

Povidone-iodine (brand name Betadine in the Philippines) is a broad-spectrum topical antiseptic for treating and preventing infection in wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, and blisters.

It works by releasing free iodine, which kills bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses through iodination of lipids and oxidation of cell compounds.

Povidone-iodine has a 99.99% kill rate in 30 to 60 seconds against a wide range of pathogens.

Unlike alcohol (which can sting and damage healing tissue on open wounds), povidone-iodine is formulated for use directly on wounds and is generally better tolerated. It also provides longer lasting antiseptic effects than plain iodine tincture due to its slow-release mechanism.

This is one of the best wound antiseptics available in the Philippines and all over the world and it’s widely available, affordable, and proven to work.

What it’s used for:

  • Clean and disinfect minor cuts, scrapes, abrasions, and blisters
  • Apply to wounds after cleaning to prevent infection
  • Treat minor burns and skin infections
  • Used in surgical scrubbing and pre-operative skin preparation
  • Treat infected wounds and ulcers with diluted solution

Why it belongs in your emergency kit:

  • Superior to alcohol for direct wound application… less damaging to healing tissue
  • Broad-spectrum… kills bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa
  • The go-to wound antiseptic recommended by The Philippine Red Cross
  • More affordable and accessible in the Philippines than many alternatives
  • Works on a wide range of common injuries from kitchen burns to construction wounds
