Cold and Flu Season in the Philippines: How to Protect Your Family

Posted on May 30, 2026 by Chester Canonigo Leave a Comment on Cold and Flu Season in the Philippines: How to Protect Your Family

In our family, rhinitis (chronic inflammation of the nasal passages that causes congestion, sneezing, and runny nose) is part of our daily life.

We always have someone in the house reaching for a tissue.

Most of the time it’s me.

Sometimes it is all of us at once, passing the same stuffy nose around like it is taking turns.

The important thing is knowing the difference between rhinitis, a common cold, and actual influenza (the flu). Because what you do next depends heavily on which one you are dealing with.

ConditionKey SymptomsHow Long It Lasts
RhinitisSneezing, congestion, runny nose — no fever, no body achesOngoing — triggered by allergens, weather, or cold air
Common coldSore throat, mild congestion, low or no feverSeven to ten days — resolves on its own
Influenza (flu)Sudden high fever, severe body aches, fatigue, headacheOne to two weeks — can be serious, especially for children and elderly

What Actually Helps

  • Wash hands frequently — most respiratory viruses spread through touch before they spread through the air; this is the single most effective prevention step
  • Keep the house ventilated — air-conditioning that recirculates stale air makes things worse for rhinitis and viral spread; open windows when the rain pauses
  • Stay hydrated — water, soup, hot liquids; mucus thins when you are well hydrated and the body clears infection faster
  • For rhinitis specifically, identify and reduce your triggers — dust, mold from rain-dampened walls, pet dander, and cold air from aircon vents are the most common culprits in any home
  • Antihistamines (like cetirizine, available over the counter at Mercury Drug for around PHP 8 to PHP 15 per tablet) help manage rhinitis symptoms but do not treat a viral infection
  • See a doctor if fever goes above 38.5 degrees Celsius, if symptoms last beyond ten days, or if a child under two is affected.

Keep cetirizine, paracetamol, and an oral rehydration solution in the house before the rains hit — not after.

In Davao, a basic pediatric or general medicine consultation runs PHP 300 to PHP 800 at a private clinic, less at government health centers.

If someone in your family has persistent rhinitis that is affecting their sleep or daily life, an ENT (ear, nose, and throat doctor) can assess whether allergy testing or maintenance medication makes sense.

Do not just endure it.

Manage it proprely, and the rainy season becomes a lot less miserable for everyone.
