One item. Dozens of functions. The most useful tool you can carry.
A multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife is a compact, folding tool that combines multiple implements in a single portable device. Depending on the model, it may include a knife blade, scissors, can opener, bottle opener, file, screwdriver, wire cutter, pliers, and more.
The Swiss Army Knife by Victorinox and modern multi-tools from brands like Leatherman are the gold standard.
A multi-tool is one of the most recommended items for any Go Bag or emergency kit because of its versatility.
In an emergency you may need to cut rope, open food cans, tighten a loose screw on equipment, cut fabric, or perform dozens of other practical tasks that a single-purpose tool cannot do.
And where disaster response often requires improvising solutions on the spot, a multi-tool is practical, space-efficient, and extremely valuable
What it’s used for:
- Cut rope, fabric, food packaging, or materials with the knife blade
- Open canned food for emergency nutrition during disaster situations
- Perform minor repairs on equipment, bags, and gear with screwdrivers and pliers
- Cut wire or small components using wire cutter function
- Improvise solutions for problems that arise in field emergency scenarios
Why it belongs in your emergency kit:
- In disasters you need to improvise fast… a multi-tool gives you options when you don’t have a full toolkit
- Opening food cans without a proper opener is a surprisingly common problem in Go Bag scenarios
- Cuts rope, fabric, and materials for improvised first aid (slings, bindings, splints)
- Compact enough to attach to a bag or fit in a pocket
- Replaces many single-purpose tools with one compact, lightweight device
Pros and Cons:
| PROS | CONS |
| Replaces many separate tools in one compact, lightweight package | Knife blade classifies it as a bladed weapon in some Philippine contexts… check local regulations |
| Versatile… useful for first aid, food prep, repairs, and improvised solutions | High-quality models can be expensive (Victorinox and Leatherman are worth the price) |
| Durable, long-lasting, and reusable with proper care | Small tools in cheap multi-tools break easily under real working pressure |
| Victorinox and Leatherman models have lifetime warranties | Not a replacement for full-sized tools in serious technical work |
| Available online | Needs regular cleaning and oiling to keep blades and tools functioning well |
Speaking of multi-tools, my buddy DOmz is celebrating his 47th birthday today. Like a Swiss Army Knife, he is versatile and has so many skills that are applicable to all situations.
He’s the one I call when I can’t figure something out or need something done.
When he left for Thailand, I had to learn a lot of things that he used to do for me and that’s how valuable he is to me as a person and as a friend.
Happy Birthday DOmz! The Human Swiss Army Knife!
